It also has another meaning, which seems to fit the neighborhood: “An intoxicating or hallucinogenic beverage, used as an offering to the Hindu gods and consumed by participants in Vedic ritual sacrifices.”
Soma is the hip underbelly on the periphery of the downtown area. It is known for its many clubs, galleries, creative agencies, sex shops, drug dealers, new money lofts and restaurants. Soma is a bipolar neighborhood.
One of my favorite Soma residents is a virtual one: somafm.com. Somafm describes itself as “11 unique channels of listener-supported, commercial-free, underground/alternative radio broadcasting from San Francisco.”
Somafm is one of those rare entities that seems to have an unspoken mission statement that it lives up to. Each channel is ripe with a unique angle.
Here’s an example. One channel is called “Secret Agent”, described as “The soundtrack for your stylish, mysterious, dangerous life. For Spies and PIs too!”.
This is a channel that recreates the musical ambience that actually does make you think of 007, or, more specifically, his mystique.
Somafm is listener supported (no ads). Like many webcasters, Somafm’s existence is being threated by SoundExchange’s legal actions.
